Summary

In the seventeenth chapter, Lucia Marini finds herself at a crucial crossroads. After her return to Milan, the commissioner faces a decisive confrontation with the police commissioner, a moment full of tension and implications. As the tranquil landscape of Lake Como seems like a distant memory, the frenzy and weight of her investigations spills over into the urban reality of Milan.

Lucia presents her findings and tries to convince the commissioner of the need to continue the investigation into the theft of the polypropylene formula. However, the meeting takes an unexpected turn when the commissioner tells her that he has decided to reassign the case to another official. The seemingly rational justification concerns operational priorities and limited resources, but it leaves Lucia with a deep sense of frustration and suspicion.

The commissioner, although visibly upset, accepts the official decision. But as she leaves the commissioner's office, her mind continues to mull over the matter. Too many coincidences and ambiguous signals lead her to suspect that there are external pressures or hidden motives behind this decision. The pieces of the puzzle seem to be starting to fit together, but the truth still eludes her.

Meanwhile, Thomas Müller, on the other side, learns that Lucia has been removed from the case. For him, the news is a moment of relief, a sign that his shadowy moves are bearing fruit. However, Müller is aware that Lucia may not give up so easily, and plans further measures to protect him from any further steps by the commissioner.

At the heart of the chapter, underlying tensions and personal decisions intertwine. Lucia struggles with a sense of impotence and the desire to continue the investigation, even if the institutional forces seem to want to close every door. The chapter suggests that, despite the blow received, Lucia's determination has not weakened, but is instead finding new, less conventional ways to emerge.

With a style full of innuendo and a narrative that creates a crescendo of tension, the chapter prepares the reader for new revelations, suggesting that the power game and the underground connections are not yet fully revealed. Lucia is ready to continue, even if everything seems to be going against her.

Stories. Shadows of Ambition. Chapter 17: The Renunciation

That morning, Lucia woke up early in her hotel room in Corenno Plinio, while outside Lake Como lay peaceful beneath a sky that promised another sunny day. Despite the quiet beauty of the lakeside scenery, Lucia’s heart was troubled, weighed down by the decisions she was about to make.

After a night of reflection and doubts, she had arrived at the inescapable conclusion that Müller had lied to her from start to finish. No more doubts, no room for further talks or attempted mediation. It was time to act, and to do so, she would have to return to Milan—to police headquarters—and take decisive measures.

Lucia got ready carefully, choosing a simple yet professional outfit that would reflect the seriousness of the task before her. Before leaving her room, she lingered at the window to gaze at the lake. The calm water offered her a fleeting moment of peace, strengthening her resolve.

Leaving the hotel, Lucia approached her rented Fiat Topolino, parked a short distance away. The little car had become a trusty companion for her trips between Corenno Plinio and Milan; despite its small size, it proved surprisingly reliable and maneuverable on the roads skirting the lake.

Her journey to Milan began along the lakeside route.

At that hour, traffic was still light, allowing her to drive with relative ease. As she went, the landscape changed from the peaceful lakeside atmosphere to a more urban and frenetic setting as she drew near the city. The drive gave her time to think about her next moves. She knew what challenges awaited her, yet also understood the need to act swiftly to prevent further damage or manipulation on Müller’s part.

After about an hour and a half, Lucia hit Milan’s heavier traffic. The city buzzed like a beehive, a sharp contrast to Corenno Plinio’s tranquility. Skillfully steering her Topolino through the streets, Lucia felt a mix of anxiety and determination welling inside her.

Reaching police headquarters, she parked and headed directly to her superior’s office. Her step was purposeful, her expression serious and focused. As soon as she was granted entry, she began to present her findings and conclusions with precision and authority. She was ready to demand immediate, drastic measures, to insist the investigation be pursued with a new direction, free from Müller’s interference and lies......
