Summary

The next morning, when Marco Anselmi opened his eyes, daylight was already filtering through the thin curtains of room 204 at the Bernardi Hotel. He didn’t feel rested at all. His body was tired, tense from the previous night’s ordeal, and his mind was still crowded with images of that door slamming shut on its own, that shuffling sound, that unnatural wheezing he had heard within the cold walls of the Ravelli house.

He got up with difficulty, sitting on the edge of the bed for a moment to gather his thoughts. He recalled Marina’s words, her despair mixed with determination. “I want to discover the truth, even if it’s the last thing I do.” He wanted that truth as well, although a vague fear suggested that this mystery held shadows far darker than he had imagined.


A wall-mounted stove offered only faint warmth, while a thin layer of frost had formed on the windowpanes.

Outside, Foppolo carried on with its silent winter, seemingly indifferent to what had taken place in that abandoned house just a few hours earlier. And yet, Marco felt as though he bore the weight of a long-forgotten story, now knocking insistently once again....
