Determined not to let herself be stopped, Lucia embarks on an exciting seaplane flight over the lake. Flying over the castle of Corenno Plinio, Lucia carefully observes every detail of the structure, hoping that from above something that had escaped her on the ground might emerge. The atmosphere during the overflight is tense: the castle appears as a silent sentinel, guardian of unspeakable truths.
Returning from the flight, a new revelation shakes Lucia. Doctor Branchini, an ally in the investigation, contacts her urgently, telling her about a disturbing episode that occurred during the night: armed and wounded men showed up at her door, seeking medical care with implicit threats. Who were they? And what connection do they have with the Keepers of the Shadow?
The meeting with Marshal Valenti sheds new light on the operational possibilities. Lucia proposes a daring night stakeout near the castle, convinced that it could reveal suspicious movements and open a breach in the wall of secrecy that surrounds the place. Morning light filtered through the curtains, waking Lucia. After a moment, she approached the window and opened it, letting herself be embraced by the beauty of Lake Como on a glorious May day.
The lake was calm, a perfect mirror reflecting the surrounding mountains, their peaks still dusted with a faint layer of snow. The blue waters, the lush gardens of the villas along the shore, and the clear sky created a scene of unspoiled serenity and beauty.
Heading down to breakfast, Lucia found the Hotel Belvedere’s dining room abuzz with life. Among the guests, there was an elderly couple—likely husband and wife—sharing a newspaper and discussing an article animatedly, exchanging smiles and delighted glances.
At another table, a young man in a stylish traveling suit was jotting down notes in a small notebook, absorbed in his thoughts—perhaps a writer or journalist in search of inspiration.
A family with two small children was trying to plan their day; the kids were excited at the thought of exploring the lake, while the parents dealt patiently and lovingly with their children’s early-morning energy.
Lucia served herself a coffee and joined them, opting for a light breakfast: fresh bread, local cheeses, and a slice of apple cake. While enjoying her coffee, Paolo approached her with his usual impeccable discretion.
Paolo: “Commissaria Marini, there was a call for you from Miss Chiara, the guide in Varenna.
She’s waiting for you in the reading room, should you wish to speak with her.”Thanking Paolo, Lucia headed to the reading room, where she picked up the wall-mounted telephone.
Lucia (on the phone): “Commissaria Marini speaking, good morning, Chiara.”
Chiara: “Good morning, commissaria. I have some news regarding your request to visit the castle. Initially, the mayor seemed willing to oblige, but as soon as he found out that you, personally, were interested in visiting, he changed his mind, saying it was no longer possible.”
Lucia: “I see. Did he provide any specific reason for this change of heart?”
Chiara: “I’m sorry, commissaria, he refused to give any details. He simply said that at this moment, it’s not appropriate to grant access to the castle. I realize this may complicate your investigation.”
Lucia: “Thank you for trying, Chiara.” This turn of events raised more questions, Lucia thought. “I appreciate your help.”
Chiara: “I hope you find another way to get the information you need. If I can help in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact me.”
After thanking Chiara again and hanging up, Lucia remained thoughtful for a moment. The mayor’s sudden refusal to allow her into the castle added another piece to the puzzle surrounding Corenno Plinio. Determined not to be discouraged, she resolved to pursue her investigation in other ways, aware that the truth was likely within reach, but would require patience and cunning to uncover. With these thoughts in mind, Lucia left the reading room, ready to face whatever challenges the day might bring......
