Müller remained motionless for a few moments after closing the office door, the weight of his conversation with Lucia still palpable in the air.
He felt the need to act, to seize control of a situation that was rapidly slipping from his grasp. Striding purposefully toward his desk, he picked up the telephone—its glossy black finish seeming to absorb the room’s light.
He dialed a number he knew by heart, one that appeared on no official document. While the phone rang on the other side of the world, his heart pounded erratically, each ring an echo of his fears and his resolve.
“Hello?” answered a neutral, attentive voice on the other end.
“This is K18,” Müller introduced himself in a low voice, using his codename, an alias linking him to a network far wider than mere financial transactions or business meetings.
“D8 here, I’m listening,” replied his contact after a brief pause for security verification.
“I need to speak with you about an emerging problem,” Müller continued, serious and direct. “Commissioner Lucia Marini… she’s becoming far too big an issue. It’s time to act to contain her.”
“What do you suggest?” asked D8, his voice now taut in recognition of the seriousness of the instructions to follow.
“I want you to keep her under surveillance. We need to know everything about her: whom she talks to, whom she meets, where she goes. I want detailed reports on her routines, her movements. And, crucially, find out if she has any weaknesses—vices, anything we can use to our advantage,” Müller ordered with surgical precision.
“Understood, K18. We’ll take the necessary steps. You’ll get regular updates,” D8 replied, his tone conveying both the routine nature of this type of task and the gravity of the situation.......
