SHADOWS OF AMBITION. CHAPTER 6: THE INCOMPLETE PUZZLE

rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - Shadows of Ambition. Chapter 6: The Incomplete Puzzle
Summary

The sixth chapter of Ombre di Ambizione takes us to the heart of the investigation, as Commissioner Lucia Marini and Inspector Carlo Conti delve into the complexities of an increasingly thick mystery. With the polypropylene formula finally recovered, deciphered in part thanks to the collaboration of Enrico Sartori and Professor Ferrari, a shocking discovery emerges: an essential part of the sequence is missing. Its absence, far from being a mistake, suggests a deliberate intention to conceal total control of the formula from a single individual or group.

Between theories and intuitions, a new trail takes shape, leading the protagonists to the castle of Corenno Plinio, a place steeped in history and mystery on the shores of Lake Como. This ancient building, with its towers and walls marked by time, is not just a medieval relic: it becomes the center of suspicions and legends, surrounded by an aura of secrecy.

Tensions mount as Marini confronts three key figures in the local community: Dr. Branchini, a retired physician in Corenno Plinio; Marshal Valenti, commander of the Dervio barracks; and Mayor Albertini, the enigmatic custodian of the town’s dynamics. Each, with their own nuances, offers pieces of a fragmented puzzle, made up of furtive movements at dawn, unusual activity around the castle, and a stubborn reticence.

The testimonies, however, leave many questions unanswered: who are these mysterious figures lurking near the castle? What secrets are hidden within its ancient walls? And above all, is the castle really the secret sanctuary of the organization known as the Keepers of the Shadow?

With each step, Marini and his team get closer to a truth that promises to be disturbing and full of danger. The enveloping atmosphere of the chapter, between ambiguous interrogations, historical details and growing suspicions, captures the reader and pushes him to follow the protagonists in the next chapter, where the confrontation with the castle and its secrets now seems inevitable.

The Case of the Lost Polypropylene Formula in Milan

by Marco Arezio

Stories. Shadows of Ambition. Chapter 6: The Incomplete Puzzle

Inside the MilanTech labs, Commissioner Lucia Marini watched closely as Enrico Sartori and Professor Ferrari worked side by side, immersed in the complex process of deciphering the polypropylene formula.

The atmosphere was charged with a nearly tangible tension—every movement precise, every gaze focused on the sheets before them.

Silence was broken only by the ticking of instruments and the occasional hum of the machines. Enrico Sartori and Professor Ferrari sat next to each other—former colleagues and now enemies—in front of a large board covered with many chemical formulas.

Ferrari: “Enrico, where do we start? This data sequence is monumental.”

Sartori: “Let’s first focus on the sections we recognize. The formula is encrypted, but some parts should guide us like Ariadne’s thread.”

As they sifted through the data, their concentration was palpable. Every so often, Ferrari paused, pointing to the board.

Ferrari: “Here, look at this section. Don’t these compounds look familiar?”

Sartori: “Yes, absolutely. This is a sequence I developed during my early experiments. If we follow this path, we might…”

Their technical discussion continued, jumping from one discovery to another, as they began to decode pieces of the formula. But after hours of work, Sartori abruptly stopped, confusion on his face.

Sartori: “Wait, this doesn’t make sense. This part of the sequence… it’s missing. It’s as though it was deliberately removed.”

Ferrari, leaning in to see the parchment more clearly, nodded slowly. “I see what you mean. But why would someone remove just one part? If the goal was to prevent us from reconstructing it, why not destroy it all?”

Sartori: “That’s exactly what worries me.

It’s as if… as if someone wanted to be the only one to hold the complete formula.”

Professor Ferrari, forehead creased with worry, bent down to examine the problem more closely. “How is that possible? I thought you said only you knew about the parchment, Enrico.”

Sartori, visibly pale, ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “That’s what I believed… but now,” his voice trembled slightly, “I’m starting to wonder if I’ve been followed or spied on. Because why take just one part of the formula instead of stealing the parchment outright?”

Marini, who had been silently following their work, intervened: “It could mean that the thief wanted to ensure they alone would end up possessing the complete formula. Perhaps ‘Il Custode’ already knew where that sequence was located and acted to maintain exclusive control of it.”

The thought that The Shadow Keepers might be a step ahead of them cast an even darker shadow over the situation.

“We have to find out where the missing part of the formula is,” Marini said decisively.

Sartori, still shaken by the revelation, nodded slowly. “There’s only one place they could have hidden the sequence without raising suspicion… a location known only to the inner circle of the Keepers.”

Marini leaned in, her interest clear. “And where would that be, Dr. Sartori?”

“At the castle of Corenno Plinio,” Sartori replied. “For them, it was more of a scientific sanctuary than a refuge. If there’s any hope of finding the missing formula, it’s there.”

Sartori knew about the castle of Corenno Plinio and its role as a meeting place for The Shadow Keepers because of his reluctant involvement with the organization.

During his initial days of collaborating with the Keepers, he had been invited to attend a meeting at the castle, pitched as an opportunity to discuss the future of science and technology with like-minded individuals.

That experience had revealed to him the existence and darker intentions of the Keepers, as well as the importance they placed on Corenno Plinio as their secret sanctuary.

Eager not to waste any time, Marini immediately organized an expedition to the castle, armed with this new information. Before leaving, however, she spotted a small note on the floor near Sartori’s workstation.

Picking it up, she found it was a handwritten memo listing a series of coordinates and the word “Corenno,” convincing her it could be the right lead....
