rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - The Mysteries of Oltrecolle. Chapter 7: The Meeting with Dr. Morandi
Summary

In the seventh chapter, Elena enters the Faccanoni Hospital interview room for the first time to meet the mysterious Dr. Morandi, the central figure in her investigation. The setting is spare and free of distractions, marked by a suspenseful atmosphere that heightens the emotional tension of the scene. Morandi appears surprisingly well-groomed and dignified, but remains locked in his silence, fueling the sense of enigma. Elena cautiously tries different approaches, ranging from respectful silences to open-ended questions about his life and professional past, without much success.

Only after much persistence does she manage to bring out a key word—"work"—that opens a window onto a complex and perhaps still inaccessible inner world. Through a tense and fragmented dialogue, profound themes emerge, such as the meaning of the doctor's role, the boundaries between care and control, and the vision of a "parallel world" that unites those experiencing mental suffering. The encounter thus becomes a psychological duel, where the gaze and the unsaid speak louder than words. Elena leaves the room with new questions, aware of finding herself facing a reality far more intricate than she had imagined, and with the suspicion that the mystery of Oltrecolle is only just beginning to unfold.

In the heart of the interview room: between silences, hidden truths and the hypnotic gaze of an enigmatic mind

Dr. Morandi was already seated in the interview room when Elena entered, guided by the nurse's silent steps. The scene before her was very different from what she would have expected after his tales of isolation and silence. The man before her was meticulously groomed: his hair short and neat, his face clean-shaven, his clothes simple but clean, a blue shirt buttoned up to the neck and a gray sweater that protected his shoulders. There was nothing in his appearance that betrayed abandon or neglect; on the contrary, the composed dignity with which he occupied the space was striking, as if he still wanted to convey, at least through his gestures, a sense of order and respect.

The room was bare and silent, illuminated by the bright light streaming in from the large windows. The furnishings were stripped down to the bare essentials: a few light-wood tables, simple chairs, the bare walls interrupted only by a few faded paintings, still lifes or uninspired landscapes, chosen more to fill than to truly decorate. On the opposite wall, a window opened onto a direct view of the church of Sarnico, its bell tower peeking out from among the red rooftops and the shimmering reflection of the lake just beyond the square.

There was a seeming calm in the air, almost a suspense that might have invited reflection. But Elena, as she entered and placed her bag beside the chair, sensed a subtle, growing tension within her.

She felt her heart beating faster than usual, and the awareness that this first meeting could mark a turning point in her investigation. Morandi didn't look up immediately, but she sensed a watchful presence in him, an almost ancient composure. Every detail—his erect posture, his hands folded on the table, the impassive serenity of his gestures—added a further nuance to the mystery Elena had carried with her from Oltrecolle.

In that bare space, devoid of frills and any distracting element, Elena felt the importance of every word and every silence. She knew that the conversation with Morandi would be anything but simple, but in that room, bathed in a clear, uncompromising light, she felt it was time to put aside all hesitation. She took a deep breath and sat down, preparing for that meeting that, perhaps, would finally shed light on the shadows that had haunted her for days....
