Tales. The Secret of Corenno Plinio. Chapter 2: A New Beginning

The golden light of dawn filled Lisa and Andrea's stone house in Corenno Plinio, filtering through the curtains and gently waking them from their sleep. The day promised to be serene, and the air was fresh and crisp, typical of mornings on Lake Como. After an intense week of work, they were happy to take a break and enjoy the tranquility of the village.

It seemed that Lisa and Andrea had everything they desired in life. Andrea worked as a doctor at the hospital in Bellano, a few kilometers away. Specialized in internal medicine, he was appreciated by his colleagues for his competence and by his patients for his empathy. Every day, he passionately dedicated himself to caring for the sick, facing complex and delicate situations. The job was demanding, but Andrea always found a way to balance his professional life with his personal one.

Lisa, on the other hand, was a history of art teacher at the high school in Colico. Her passion for art shone through in every lesson, inspiring her students to explore the world of art with curiosity and creativity. She loved leading guided tours to museums and galleries, enriching learning with direct experiences. Her enthusiasm and dedication made her one of the most beloved teachers at the school. The scenic route to Colico was a journey Lisa gladly took every day, enjoying the view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Their home, located in the upper part of Corenno Plinio, was the perfect refuge. Built with local stone, it had a rustic yet cozy appearance. The windows with green shutters overlooked a small garden full of flowers. The balcony offered a breathtaking view of Lake Como, a panorama they never tired of. Inside, the house was furnished with simple yet elegant taste, thanks to pieces Lisa had found at local markets, immersing the house in the culture of the lake.

The living room was dominated by a large stone fireplace, perfect for winter evenings. Above the fireplace, a parchment framed in oak recounted the history of Corenno Plinio. The parchment, discovered by Lisa at a market in Menaggio, narrated the origins of the village, founded in the 13th century.

According to the parchment, Corenno Plinio takes its name from Pliny the Elder, the famous Roman writer and naturalist who explored these lands. Although there is no concrete evidence that Pliny founded the village, his figure is revered as a symbol of knowledge and discovery.

In the 13th century, Corenno Plinio became a strategic defense point against incursions, thanks to the construction of the castle and defensive walls. The castle, now partially in ruins, was an imposing structure that dominated the village and offered a strategic view of the lake. It was built at the behest of Ottone Visconti, an influential archbishop of Milan who sought to consolidate his power in the region.

During the Renaissance, the village experienced a period of prosperity thanks to the Borromeo family, who took control of the area. Carlo Borromeo, archbishop of Milan and later a saint, frequently visited Corenno Plinio, promoting religious and social reforms. His influence led to the construction of new churches and the embellishment of the village with works of art and architecture.

In the 18th century, the village witnessed the Napoleonic invasions. Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of two worlds, passed through Corenno Plinio during his campaign for the unification of Italy. It is said that he found refuge in the village for a few days, receiving support from the local inhabitants.

The parchment continued to describe how Corenno Plinio had resisted the changes of time, maintaining its medieval charm. Every stone, every alley, told a story of resilience and timeless beauty.

That evening, Lisa and Andrea decided to cook risotto with perch, a specialty of Lake Como. Andrea took care of the fish, filleting it skillfully and preparing a light breading. Lisa, on the other hand, focused on the risotto, using homemade broth and seasoning it with a touch of fresh sage, gathered directly from their garden.

While the risotto cooked slowly, Lisa prepared an appetizer of bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, basil, and buffalo mozzarella. The table was carefully set, with a centerpiece of fresh flowers from the garden and candles creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The garden, though small, was a riot of colors. Lisa and Andrea had planted roses of various varieties, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. Tulips and daffodils sprouted in spring, followed by geraniums and lavender in summer. There was also a corner dedicated to aromatic herbs: rosemary, sage, basil, and mint, which they often used in cooking. The garden was a place of peace, where they loved to spend time reading, chatting, or simply relaxing.

After dinner, they decided to take a walk along the lake. Corenno Plinio, with its ancient stone houses, narrow alleys, and stairways leading to the lake, had a timeless charm. As they walked, they greeted neighbors and observed the village life unfolding around them.

They passed by the medieval church of San Tommaso di Canterbury, whose ancient stones told stories of centuries past. On the churchyard, some villagers chatted, enjoying the evening coolness. A group of children ran and played hide-and-seek in the alleys, their laughter filling the air.

As they walked along one of the cobbled streets, they noticed the streetlights turning on, casting a warm glow on the house facades. The view was suggestive and romantic. They reached the main square of the village, where time seemed to have stopped. The stone houses, cobbled streets, and stairways leading to the lake contributed to creating a magical atmosphere. In the square, a group of elders discussed local politics animatedly, while a street artist painted a landscape of the lake.

"It's nice to see so much life in the village even in the evening," Andrea commented, observing the scene. "Corenno Plinio has a unique energy."

"Yes, it does," Lisa replied. "Every corner has a story to tell, and the people here are extraordinary."

They approached the lakeside, where boats were peacefully moored. The local fishermen had already arranged the nets and equipment for the next night of fishing. Old Pietro, who was finishing preparing his boat, greeted Andrea with a calloused hand. "Good evening, Andrea! Today will be a perfect day for fishing."

"Good evening, Pietro," Andrea replied. "I hope you have a good catch."

They continued along the path that ran alongside the lake, enjoying the view of the surrounding mountains and the sound of the waves gently lapping the shore. "I was thinking," Andrea said, "that we could improve the garden behind the house. We could plant more flowers and create a corner where we can relax on summer evenings."

Lisa nodded. "That sounds like a wonderful idea. I love flower gardens. And it would be nice to have a place all our own to spend time outdoors."

They returned home with renewed energy, determined to make their refuge in Corenno Plinio even more special. After tidying up the house and starting to plan the garden work for the next day, they decided to take a moment to relax on the balcony, which offered a breathtaking view of the lake.

Sitting in wicker chairs, with a cup of herbal tea in hand, they watched the day fade away. The sky was tinged with warm colors, the light fading, reflecting in the calm waters of the lake. "You know," Lisa said, "this week made me realize how important it is to take time for ourselves. We need to learn to slow down and appreciate the small moments."

Andrea nodded, his face illuminated by the faint golden light of the sunset. "You're right. Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily routine that we forget to stop and enjoy the present. This place offers us the chance to do that."

The evening continued in a climate of serenity and complicity. As the sky darkened and the stars began to appear, Lisa and Andrea felt grateful for everything they had. Their home in Corenno Plinio was more than just a refuge; it was a place where they could be themselves, grow together, and face any challenge.

Before going to sleep, they sat again on the balcony, wrapped in a blanket, watching the stars shining in the clear sky. "You know," Andrea said, "every day that passes, I realize how lucky we are. This place, our life together... it's all so perfect."

Lisa nestled close to him, feeling the warmth of his body. "Yes, it is. And I can't wait to see what the future holds for us."

And with those words, they fell asleep, wrapped in the warmth of their love, ready to face a new day in Corenno Plinio, with hearts full of hope and joy.
