THE LIGHTS OF ROCCACHIARA. CHAPTER 5: THE BOOK THAT CHANGED LANGUAGES

Slow Life
rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - The Lights of Roccachiara. Chapter 5: The Book That Changed Languages
Summary

In Roccachiara, a mysterious book appears in the library and displays an unexpected property: it changes language depending on who reads it. It's neither a game nor a trick, but an object that challenges the habits, fears, and certainties of an entire community. Among children, adults, and newcomers, words become mirrors capable of revealing ancient shames and hidden desires.

The discovery of the book triggers subtle tensions, misunderstandings, and difficult choices, forcing the country to question the meaning of welcome. In a climate where fear threatens to close doors, concrete and fragile cultural gestures emerge. The story follows a path of listening, translation, and shared responsibility. Because a language is not just a way of speaking, but a way of inhabiting the world together.

A story about words, identity, and inclusion: when languages become bridges and memory builds community

Children's storybook. The Lights of Roccachiara. Chapter 5: The Book That Changed Languages

Ever since the Clear Water Pact was born in Roccachiara and the True Stories Festival became an almost natural fixture, the library had begun to fill up more frequently. Not just with children, but also with adults who, perhaps, came for a practical reason—a form, a notice, a connection—and then lingered for a moment to browse a book. As if memory, once rekindled, had begun to demand space.

One afternoon, while Nico and Amina were helping Elena sort out some books, a small, strange thing happened: a book fell from a shelf without anyone touching it.

It wasn't a loud thud. It was a sharp thud and then a rustling of pages.

Nico picked it up. It was a book with a dark cover, untitled. It didn't even have the author's name. Just a small engraved symbol: a key that looked like it was made of thin lines, as if drawn with the tip of a knife.

“I’ve never seen it,” Elena said, surprised.

Amina looked at it carefully. "And yet... it seems ancient."

Nico leafed through it. The pages were clear, but the writing inside wasn't Italian. It looked like a foreign language. Or maybe more than one.

Amina leaned over and read a line. Then she frowned. "I don't understand."

Nico, who was good at school but not a wizard, tried too. He didn't understand. There were signs, letters, words that seemed to slip out of his head.

Elena took the book, turned it over, and smelled it (yes, she smelled books, as if the scent told the truth). "It's not a catalog book," she said. "And it's not a modern book."

Amina pointed to the key symbol. "Maybe it's a book that opens something. Like the door to memory."

Nico felt a shiver run through him: ever since they had seen Cromavia, every object with a symbol seemed to be able to speak softly.

Elena put it on the table and said, "We can't leave it here without understanding. But there's a problem: if it's in a language no one knows, how can we read it?"

Amina looked at him.

"Maybe... it's not in one language. Maybe it's in many."

Nico grimaced. "Like a jumbled book?"

Amina shook her head. "Like a book that... changes."

Nico was about to reply, but at that moment the impossible happened.

The page Nico was looking at—full of incomprehensible writing—seemed to tremble. Not physically, as if there were a wind, but as if the ink were changing consistency. Then, slowly, the letters rearranged themselves. And before Nico, crystal-clear words appeared.

In Italian.

Nico blanched. "Amina... do you see?"

Amina leaned forward and gasped. "Yes."

On the page was a simple sentence:

“Read me in the language of your heart.”

Nico swallowed. "Is this… a joke?"

Elena looked at the page and paled as well. "It's not a joke."....
