An illustrated story to explain to children what happened to the dam in Sicily that was never used — a tale of waste, promises, and thirst

Once upon a time, in a beautiful land called Sicily, among green mountains and little villages that smelled of warm bread, there was a very big problem: there was no water. Farmers couldn’t water their fields, animals were thirsty, and families had to save every single drop.

One day, a group of important men gathered around a big table full of maps and drawings. They had decided to build something huge to fix everything: a dam! A big, strong dam that could hold lots of water, just like a giant bottle.

The dam would be called Blufi, just like the nearby village. It was supposed to collect water from the Imera River and send it to all the people living in the Madonie mountains.

The work began after many years of promises and talking. Bulldozers, trucks, engineers with colorful helmets… everyone got to work. After a long time – more than ten years! – the dam was finished. Big, tall, made all of concrete. A true giant!

But there was a small problem. Actually… a huge one.

A dam without water is like a fountain turned off.

When the dam was finally finished, everyone expected to see the water flowing and filling up the space. But... surprise! The water never came.

The Imera River, which was supposed to feed the dam, was tiny and nearly dry. The rains had become rare, and the nearby hills no longer held the water like before. But the biggest mistake was this: nobody had built the pipes, canals, or pumps to carry the water to towns and farms!

It was like building a bathtub without a faucet or a drain!

A forgotten giant in the silence.

Years passed. The Blufi Dam stayed there, still, empty, and silent. Nobody used it. Some looked at it from afar and shook their heads. Others simply forgot it existed.

Nature around the dam started to change. Some plants disappeared, some animals ran away. The river was diverted, the ground dried out, and on rainy days, dangerous giant puddles formed. Meanwhile, farmers were still thirsty and had to buy water brought by big trucks called autobotti.

A mountain of money… for nothing!

To build the dam, a huge amount of money had been spent — more than 60 billion lire! Money that came from the State, from Europe, from everyone.

And nobody took the blame. Offices passed the responsibility around like a hot potato. Everyone said, “It wasn’t my fault!” And so time passed, and nothing was fixed.

Today, the Blufi Dam is still there. An empty giant, built to help people but left useless. Meanwhile, the land in Sicily is getting drier and drier, and people are still waiting for a solution.

Maybe, instead of building giant things without thinking carefully, we should do many small and useful things: collect rainwater, waste less, and help farmers with simple and smart tools.

The story of the Blufi Dam teaches us that dreaming big is not enough: we must also plan carefully, listen to those who know the land, and never waste what is precious. Like water. Like time. Like people’s trust.

And so, dear children, if one day you become engineers, mayors, farmers, or just curious citizens, remember the story of the giant called Blufi. And always ask questions — because the future needs sharp minds and responsible hearts.
