In the context of the global transition to a low-carbon economy, Morocco stands out as a key player, thanks to the recent agreement signed between the Moroccan government and TE H2, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and the EREN Group, together with the Danish partners Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and A.P. Møller Capital.

This partnership is focused on developing the "Chbika" project, an ambitious and innovative initiative in the field of renewable energy and green hydrogen.


A Strategic Agreement for Green Energy

Under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron, the land reservation agreement for the "Chbika" project was formalized on October 28, 2024.

Located in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, along Morocco's Atlantic coast, the project marks a significant step towards creating a global hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia production, primarily intended for the European market.

A distinctive aspect of the project is its use of solar and wind energy to power the electrolysis of desalinated water, producing green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be converted into green ammonia, with an estimated annual production target of 200,000 tons.

This substance, used in various industrial sectors, is a key resource for decarbonization, offering a sustainable alternative to current high-carbon production processes.


The Role of TE H2, CIP, and A.P. Møller Capital

The "Chbika" project involves TE H2 in the development of renewable energy infrastructure alongside CIP, which, through its Energy Transition Fund, will contribute to creating the necessary wind and solar capacity for green hydrogen production. A.P. Møller Capital, in turn, will focus on constructing and managing port and logistical infrastructure to facilitate the export of green ammonia to Europe.

The agreement underscores Morocco's unique potential in the renewable energy sector, with some of the world’s best wind and solar resources. The country’s geographic position makes it a strategic partner for Europe, which aims to accelerate its energy transition towards the European "Green Deal" and enhance its energy security.


Comments from Project Leaders

Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed gratitude to the Moroccan authorities for their trust and emphasized that the "Chbika" project aligns with the company's strategy to develop renewables in highly competitive regions.

Pouyanné stated: "Morocco has an exceptional geographic position and resources to become a key partner for Europe, and TotalEnergies aims to contribute to this ambition."

David Corchia, CEO of TE H2, also highlighted the strategic value of the project for Morocco, noting that the agreement represents a critical first step towards implementing a green energy-focused investment program. According to Corchia, Morocco plays a fundamental role in providing clean, affordable energy to Europe while simultaneously contributing to its sustainable industrialization.

Philip Christiani, a partner at CIP, emphasized Morocco's potential as a future leader in the global energy transition. CIP's involvement in the project reflects the importance of strengthening ties between Europe and Morocco to achieve global emissions reduction goals.

Lastly, Kim Fejfer, CEO of A.P. Møller Capital, underscored the importance of efficient logistical infrastructure for the success of green hydrogen, an area where A.P. Møller Capital brings long-standing experience, enabling the creation of a valuable chain in collaboration with local partners and Moroccan authorities.
