Acid mine wastewater (AMD) is a major source of concern in mining.

It is an acidic liquid with high concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfates. AMD forms when sulfur-containing minerals are present in manufacturing waste.

In contact with air, and often thanks to bacterial activity, sulfuric acid is generated . Due to the low pH, metals such as copper, lead, cadmium and arsenic are released into solution. Contact with surface or groundwater can cause serious damage to the environment.

Additionally, there is wastewater residue that includes water used to clean equipment, containing sediment, debris and emulsified oils. Finally, domestic wastewater produced in remote mining areas is a common discharge stream in the mining sector.
