Marina leaves Foppolo with a heavy heart and the feeling that the mountains follow her like a secret. On the highway, the pace becomes hypnotic, and a stop at a service station turns into a seemingly casual encounter that raises doubts. A young woman with a blue package changes Marina's horizons: her fragility hides a tension that quickly becomes apparent.
At the same time, in Foppolo's operating rooms, electronic eyes carefully observe every movement, transforming human gestures into signals to be decoded. A small act of kindness, a choice of empathy, paves the way for an escalation that no one, neither Marina nor the operators, could have truly foreseen. The chapter advances like a blade: slow in observation, quick in striking at hidden truths.
A journey between mountain and plain, where the past still whispers and an unexpected event changes Marina’s fate
Stories. The Enigma of the Abandoned House of Foppolo. Chapter 13 B: Along the Road of Silence
Milan had been at his post for a long time, but this time it wasn’t only routine that kept him there: a kind of silent emotion had risen in him as he watched, through those pixels and colored traces, the brief scene of humanity at the pump. He had the map before his eyes as if it were an animated postcard: the icon of Marina’s car stopping, the little orange dot of the halt, the short zigzag stretch that betrayed a frantic search. And he followed it all with the care of someone observing something fragile and precious.
In the center of the monitor, the “jewel” — as they had unimaginatively nicknamed it — was not, for Milan, a technical object to show off, but a small, faithful promise. It was tiny, discreet, glued to a point under the chassis like an oriental stone, a very sophisticated detector: it could transmit the positions of the vehicle on which it was installed over very long distances thanks to its excellent operational autonomy, and it was also versatile enough to execute other types of commands that might be required on occasion. It could interfere with the engine, with a phone, with the navigator, create a short circuit or trigger an explosive charge. Truly a marvel of engineering.
And yet, in the narrative it returned on the screen, it had the force of an attentive interlocutor: it did not give orders, it did not shout, it told.
It was able to collect movements, mark stops, understand when a car slowed because the driver was searching for something or because a passenger had climbed in. It did this without judgment: it turned gestures into facts, pauses into notes, glances into signals....
