rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - The latest fashion in the kitchen: cooking with the dishwasher

Food can be cooked, in special containers, during the washing of dishes to save energy

There is no need to make major projects to follow the principles of the circular economy and environmental protection, but the attention to the waste of our daily lives, multiplied and expanded by the number of the population, will affect the well-being of our planet.

Have you ever thought that the use of more or less hot water affects consumption and pollution?

Think that to heat 60 liters of water you need 2.17 kw/h, while for 20 only 0.72 are enough (a dishwasher with the Eco program consumes just between 0.8 and 1.5 kw/h).

That’s why the idea was born to take even more advantage of the microclimate that is produced in the dishwasher during washing, using high temperatures to cook food.

How do you cook food in the dishwasher?

During washing, a hot steam develops inside the machine that is comparable to that of steaming used for many types of food, in the most healthy kitchen. So, by inserting in the dishwasher special containersstrictly airtight (not to spoil the food with direct contact with water) you can cook them naturally, while in the meantime wash the dishes of lunch.

Depending on the type of washing you can of course choose the cooking temperature. Dishwasher cookers are also popular on the web.

What is the relationship between the temperature of the wash and the temperature of cooking?

  • Eco wash – low-temperature cooking (50 degrees – 55 degrees C)
  • Normal washing – medium-temperature cooking (60 degrees – 65 degrees C)
  • Intensive washing – medium high temperature cooking (70 degrees – 75 degrees C).

For cooking you can also use the special vacuum bags, which are also suitable for cooking. Beware that as well as airtight jars, the bags are also washable and reusable, so as to make a real service to the environment.

If you want to try what you have at home now, test yourself with simple foods that cook at low temperatures. You can try any food: meats, fish, shellfish, fruits, vegetables.

What foods are not recommended for cooking in the dishwasher?

Of course, you prefer to cook in the dishwasher only foods that require short cooking and at low temperatures.

Avoid foods such as rice or legumes, which require long cooking and high temperatures.

Saving water, running and gas are the daily contributions that we can make through the correct use of energy sources in our home.
