rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - Agreement for the Supply of Biofuels in Maritime Transport

The decarbonisation of maritime transport is one of the many points to be tackled if you want, definitively and planned, achieve total sustainable mobility

The current picture of maritime transport, both commercial and civil , sees the constant transit of cargo, between one continent and another, which consume thousands of tons of fuel per journey, a consumption rate that must be multiplied by  thousands of ships constantly present on the seas, and multiplied by hundreds of thousands of trips per year.

This huge, incredible amount of fossil fuels could be replaced by biofuels that come from the processing of waste from differentiated collection, from animal and vegetable waste.

A project in this sense was initiated through the commitment of a company operating in the biofuel sector, which signed a propellant supply contract green for maritime navigation.

Indeed, Eni Sustainable Mobility and Saipem have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of using biogenic fuels on Saipem's drilling and construction vessels, with particular reference to operations in the Mediterranean Sea area.

Saipem has a fleet that operates worldwide which is made up of 45 vessels for construction and drilling.

The MoU represents an important milestone for Eni and Saipem, confirming the mutual commitment to diversify energy sources and reduce the carbon footprint in operations offshore.

Eni has been producing biofuels since 2014, thanks to the conversion of the Venice and Gela refineries into biorefineries, which since the end of 2022 are oil of free palms.

Using the proprietary Ecofining™ technology, vegetable or animal waste raw materials and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuel products are processed.

Biofuels are one of the pillars of Eni's strategic plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, through a decarbonization process that aims the abatement of emissions from industrial processes and products.

This agreement, in particular, is part of the implementation of Saipem's strategy for the reduction of GHG emissions and implements, together with the other initiatives and investments envisaged in the Group's strategic plan, the path for the reduction of its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by 2035 and the achievement of the Net Zero objective (including scope 3) by 2050.

The agreement will leverage the experience and expertise of both partners.

Eni Sustainable Mobility, one of the leading biofuel producers in Europe, makes its knowledge available in providing solutions for the reduction of carbon emissions.

Saipem, through its commitment to the energy transition, aims to increase the use of alternative fuels on its vehicles to reduce its emissions and those of its customers.

Thanks to the use of fuels of biogenic origin, Saipem aims to reduce emissions by approximately 550,000 Tons of CO2eq per year, equal to approximately 60% of its total annual scope 1 emissions.
