No more mechanical or chemical recycling: the era of physical recycling opens

The ABS recycling sector from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is experiencing a moment of intense innovation thanks to the joint work between the Dutch organization TNO and the Spanish company Elix Polymers.

Their goal is to develop an alternative methodology to both mechanical and chemical recycling, focusing on a dissolution process that allows for the separation of polymers from pigments, additives, and other contaminants. This technique, called physical recycling, uses solvents to dissolve the plastic material, enabling the recovery of higher-quality polymers compared to what is achievable with mechanical recycling, and is characterized by lower energy consumption and higher yields than chemical recycling.

During this process, the polymer is not broken down into monomers, avoiding the use of high temperatures.

Mark Roelands, a prominent researcher at TNO, has indicated that the goal for 2024 is to advance in the decontamination of ABS, aiming not only to remove pigments and flame retardants but also to separate rubber particles.

This would allow for their replacement with new ones, contributing to "rejuvenating" the ABS.

This approach is further expected to be implemented with the creation of a pilot plant in Rijswijk, the Netherlands, during the summer.

On the side of Elix Polymers, Toni Prunera Casellas, R&D manager, highlighted how the collaboration with TNO has allowed for the recovery of high-quality ABS from WEEE, so much so that Electrolux has already used this resin, mixed with virgin polymer, for the production of washing machine components.

Research and development in this field are progressing with the intention of expanding recycling applications beyond electronic waste, including end-of-life vehicles, for even more effective removal of pigments and additives.

Although specific research on ABS recycling in WEEE has not found recent updates in the context of trade fairs and conferences, events like Waste Management Europe 2024 in Bergamo and Ecomondo 2024 in Rimini represent crucial platforms to share best practices, innovations, and developments in the circular economy, recycling, and waste management.

These international meetings offer a unique opportunity for industry professionals to meet, exchange ideas, and collaborate to address challenges related to environmental sustainability.
