In the medieval convent of Saint Goffredo, Brother Elara faces betrayal, disappearances, and a dark conspiracy

The January wind howled through the narrow arched windows of the convent of Saint Goffredo, carrying with it the pungent scent of snow, wet stone, and the lingering smoke of extinguished braziers. The grey stone walls, erected centuries ago by devoted and calloused hands, stood firm, protecting a small world made of prayer, silence, and ancient secrets.

Each morning, the friars gathered in the bare refectory, wrapped in their rough habits, to silently consume barley soup and black bread, warmed only by their prayers.

It was a cruel winter, one that seemed intent on testing the very faith of men. The short, grey days followed one another without relief, while the snow covered everything in a suffocating shroud.

Brother Elara, an old monk with a severe appearance and a keen mind, sat at his desk in the heart of the scriptorium, intent on transcribing an ancient copy of De Consolatione Philosophiae by Boethius. The flickering candlelight cast vivid shadows on the cracked walls of his sparse cell. His hands, gnarled by age and cold, still moved with precision across the parchment.

It was there, shortly before Vespers, that the Prior, Brother Anselmo, came to find him, his face tense with barely concealed anxiety.

"Brother Elara," he said gravely, "we are in need of your wisdom. Brother Thomas has disappeared. This was found near the door of the relic storeroom."

In the Prior’s hand was a broken iron ring and a piece of black cloth soaked in melted wax.

"A sign, perhaps, or a warning," Elara murmured, carefully examining the objects.
