The Record Price of a Container from Asia to Europe

If we want to be precise, the record cost of a 40-foot CNT between Shanghai and Rotterdam reached exactly 10,174 USD in the month of May, demonstrating all the problems that international trade is currently experiencing.

This means a further increase of 3.1% compared to last week, but by as much as +485% compared to last year.

But why can't we stop this price run?

The reasons that gave rise to the rise in container prices up until a few months ago can be summed up, as fully described in a previous article , in the dynamics of Covid, in the stop to production all over the world, in the exceptional climatic situation in the states united, in a sudden restart of the economy and in the need to replenish minimum stocks in warehouses.

Furthermore, in the month of March , congestion occurred in the Suez Canal , due to the grounding of a ship, with the consequent flooding of container ships stationed at the ports for unloading.

The combination of high demand for goods and delays in the movement of goods in ports has created an insufficient quantity of containers available, creating a further increase in prices.

The profits of shipping companies are soaring so much that, according to the industrial group BIMCO, in the first 5 months of 2021 there were increases in orders for the construction of new container ships.
