rPET granule for food contact: the Arezio Marco Company in England

The production of recycled PET bottles, which mostly occupy the majority of the PET packaging market together with food trays, have quickly gained popularity among end consumers, who are always looking for packaging that is as sustainable as possible .

Water and soft drink producers are adapting to the growing demands for recycled packaging by including rPET in their production, a recycled raw material in granules which is certified for food contact.

In reality, faced with an enormous demand for recycled raw material, the need for bottle producers to have a supplier of rPET food , which summarizes various technical-commercial characteristics, is not always easy.

The Italian company Arezio Marco was tasked with evaluating and proposing three reliable suppliers for the inclusion of the raw material, rPET food, in the production of beverage packaging in England.

The evaluations concerned:

• Product certifications, to evaluate whether the granule respected the quality levels of production which until now was expressed only through the use of virgin PET.

• Food compatibility certification to verify compliance with EFSA regulations

• Analysis of the production cycle through the evaluation of color selection, grinding, washing, sanitization and extrusion of the product.

• Quality control of the granules produced before delivery to the customer

• Quarterly availability to allow regular supply programs

Once these evaluations were completed, a program of tests was followed on the samples delivered to the customer, which passed through laboratory analyzes to certify the alignment of the data declared by the granule manufacturer and, subsequently, with an increasing quantity of raw material, they were large-scale production tests carried out.

Once the products and their compatibility with the production of the various packaging were approved, supplies of the recycled raw material began.
