rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - New Offshore Wind Plants off the coast of Sardinia and Lazio

Three nearly 2 GW offshore wind farms to produce electricity sustainably

A new partnership of companies specializing in renewable energy, particularly in the field of offshore wind power, was set up to build three floating wind farms off the coast of Sardinia and Lazio, almost 30 km from the coasts with about 2 GW of power.

With fewer environmental constraints than onshore wind farms, floating ones can give a faster response in terms of authorization procedures and allow better use of winds moving on the surface of the sea.

With this agreement, the consortium becomes one of the major operators in the sector in Italy with projects for a total capacity of approximately 3 GW.

The new partnership is made up of GreenIT, the Italian renewable energy joint venture between Plenitude (Eni ) and CDP Equity (CDP Group), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP through its Flagship Funds), who signed an agreement for the development of three floating offshore wind farms in Lazio and in Sardinia.

The agreement provides for the development of a wind farm in Lazio, off the coast of Civitavecchia, for a total capacity of up to 540 MW and two other plants located off the coast of Olbia (Sardinia), with a power of approximately 500 MW and 1,000 MW.

The three projects are expected to generate approximately 5 TWh/year and will be operational between 2028 and 2031, once the authorization process and the subsequent construction phase have been completed.

The entire Italian offshore wind portfolio of the partnership will reach a capacity of almost 3 GW with an annual production of approximately 7 TWh of renewable energy, capable of meeting the electricity consumption of almost 2.5 million households, thus contributing to the decarbonisation objectives of the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030.

The three offshore wind farms will use floating foundations and innovative technical solutions aimed at minimizing the environmental and visual impact and will benefit from technological synergies and logistics with the other offshore wind initiatives managed under the same partnership.

The plants will be developed by a joint work team supported by Copenhagen Offshore Partners, the exclusive supplier of CIP for the implementation of the 'offshore wind power, and by NiceTechnology and 7 Seas Wind Power, Italian companies with proven experience in the offshore sector, which have already collaborated with GreenIT and CIP on the development of two other projects in Sicily and Sardinia.

This new agreement represents a further strategic element and a precise commitment to strengthen the floating offshore wind sector in Italy, providing a significant contribution towards a low-emissions future of carbon and encouraging the growth of the local production chain.
