An exciting tale of young explorers, talking trees, and a mysterious threat endangering the magic of the forest
In the little village of Castelverde, where the houses looked like they were drawn with colored pencils and cats napped on windowsills, everything had a special scent: freshly baked bread, moss after the rain, and most of all, the Pine Forest, stretching like a green carpet behind the last houses of the town.
There, among the tall branches and twisted roots, Lina and Tito played every day. They had been friends forever, explorers since they had first learned to walk. Lina had long black hair that looked like threads of night, and she always carried a yellow binoculars—even to school.
Tito had curious eyes and a hat with an owl feather that he never took off. Together, they knew every corner of the forest: the foxes’ den, the hollow tree where the owl slept, and even the flat rock that, if you tapped it three times, made lizards jump out.
That morning, as they walked to school with their backpacks and the sun still low on the horizon, they passed by the village café as usual. There, sitting under the red umbrella, some elderly folks were sipping coffee and talking in hushed tones.
“They say Legnamax is coming next week…” one of them said, sounding worried.
“The lumber company? The one that cuts everything and leaves?” murmured a lady with a floral scarf.
“That’s the one. They’ve got their eyes on the Pine Forest. They want to chop it down to make furniture!”
Lina and Tito stopped in their tracks. They looked at each other without saying a word. But in their eyes, the same thought sparkled: No. They can’t do this.
At school, they couldn’t sit still. During recess, they gathered their friends behind the gym, in the secret spot where they always hid to play. There was Giada, who could draw animals faster than lightning; Leo, who knew every bird call by heart; Yusuf, a master of hidden trails; and Nina, with her trusty binoculars like a true explorer.
“Listen,” Lina said, with the voice of someone who has a plan that allows no argument.
“They want to cut down our forest. But we’re going to stop them.”“How?” asked Leo, biting into an apple.
“By showing everyone how important it is. How alive it is. Let’s turn it into a museum! A nature museum. A living exhibition!”
Everyone’s eyes lit up.
From that day on, every afternoon, the gang ventured into the forest like real explorers. Giada drew everything she saw: frogs, flowers, spiderwebs. Leo recorded the birds’ songs on his dad’s phone.
Yusuf mapped the trails on a giant piece of paper, and Nina discovered new nests in the trees. Tito built tiny houses for animals and signs with funny names like “Fox Kingdom” and “Royal Owl Throne.” And Lina wrote everything down in her notebook: smells, sounds, stories.
After a week, the forest was ready to welcome visitors. They had organized a real Guided Exploration for parents, for their teacher… and even for the mayor, who was as curious as a child and loved to wear funny hats.
People came with hiking boots and cameras. The children led the groups along the trails, showing them rare plants, nests high in the trees, mushrooms colored like candy. They shared made-up legends, true stories, and facts like true nature experts.
At the end, everyone stopped beneath the Talking Pine, a huge, slightly crooked tree that truly seemed to be listening.
Lina stepped forward, her heart beating like a drum.
“This forest is our home. Not just for us, but for the animals, for the plants, for the air we breathe. It can’t be cut down. It needs to be known, experienced, loved.”
Tito raised the sign they had all made together:
“The Pine Forest is alive. Let’s protect it.”
The mayor took off his hat, looked around, and sighed. Then he turned to the children with a smile.
“You’re right. No one will cut down this forest. It’s too precious. You are its guardians. And I’ll be the first to help you protect it.”
That day, the forest was saved. And Lina, Tito, and their friends were called by everyone The Guardians of the Pine Forest.
Since then, every weekend, they lead new expeditions, teach the younger kids, and draw new signs. And the forest has become a special place, where trees tell stories, animals show themselves without fear, and children can feel… part of a magical world.
And if one day you find yourself in Castelverde, don’t forget to look for the Talking Pine. He will listen to you. And maybe, if you’re lucky, he’ll send Lina and Tito… for a brand-new adventure just for you.
