Summary

- The role of corrugated cardboard in packaging

- The quality of recycled corrugated cardboard for boxes

- Tests on recycled corrugated cardboard boxes for packaging

The recycled corrugated cardboard box is a package that undergoes many tests before reaching us. Let's see them

In modern packaging, recycled cardboard boxes have taken a very important space in the market, they are economical, protective, sustainable, easy to produce, printable and reusable .

Furthermore, considering that for every 100 kg. of raw material used to manufacture corrugated cardboard, more than 50% is made from recycled material, the procurement of raw materials is less complicated than in other sectors.

The use of such a high proportion of recycled cardboard is also made possible by the progress of the waste processing plants, which allow to recover and select a high percentage of fibers, eliminate contaminants and carry out treatments to obtain quality performance.

But to produce a quality corrugated cardboard box we have to go up the supply chain, checking the paper used and carrying out laboratory tests, which indicate the physical characteristics for the product we use as packaging.

Among the main tests we find:

• Weight

• Compressive strength

• Burst resistance

• Compressive strength in plane

• Cobb water absorption

• Air permeability

• Resistance to delamination

• Tensile strength

• Tensile stiffness

Not all tests will be carried out uniformly on all types of corrugated cardboard, but some control systems will be used based on the type of packaging and what they will contain .

As regards the corrugated cardboard boxes, intended for the storage of goods, a very important test concerns the vertical compressive strength, which expresses the bearing capacity of the packages stacked up.

The test is performed according to the Fefco method n ° 50, which allows you to relate the design of the corrugated cardboard box as a function of stacking, or the weight content, stacking height and a safety factor (Ct).

The compressive strength test on corrugated cardboard is performed with the waves oriented perpendicular to the plane of the plates and is applied to all types of corrugated cardboard.

Having to use the boxes for logistics it is also important to verify the proof of the containment of the objects, the resistance to vibrations and falls.

These tests are preparatory to understand the resistance of the box to the stresses and impacts imposed during transport and what degree of protection it can give to the products it contains.

Furthermore, since the boxes are made of hygroscopic corrugated cardboard, it is important to carry out the Cobb water absorption test, in fact, this method expresses, in g / m2, the quantity of distilled water absorbed by a paper sample subjected to a water column pressure of 1 cm in a given time.

As we understand, even corrugated cardboard boxes, which we do not give much consideration to when a package arrives, are packaging designed to protect in the best possible way the our purchases, at the lowest possible price and, what is not negligible, in an ecological and sustainable way.
