DOES FRENCH WINE PACKAGING TURN TO RPET BOTTLES?

rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - Does French Wine Packaging Turn to rPET Bottles?

A historic agreement between two companies to help the French wine sector tackle the glass shortage

The wine has tried in the past to leave from the usual 75 cc glass bottles., entering the carton for example, but with not excellent results.

A too different packaging, even visually, which the tasters of the nectar of the Gods did not like, also raising some doubts about the quality and shelf life of the wine inside this cardboard packaging.

Now France, a famous nation for the quantity and quality of its wine, is having difficulty finding glass for traditional bottles and, also due to skyrocketing costs, she wondered how to solve the problem.

Thus, two companies specialized in packaging for the wine sector and sustainable solutions for the bottling industry, have joined their efforts to help French farms that produce wine.

The collaboration between Vinventios, a company specialized in the production of sustainable closures for bottles, inserted in the wine production chain in many countries of the world and Packamama, a company specialized in the production of rPET wine bottles, has borne fruit on the French market.

The new bottles in rPET will replace the classic glass cylinders, which we all know, bringing, not only a stylistic novelty in the bottle, as it is oval and not cylindrical, but also a strong message from an environmental point of view, using rPET, 100% recycled, which according to Packamama, will help wineries reduce their CO2 footprint.

Furthermore, food grade recycled PET is certified in Europe and the USA, does not react to food and drinks, has no impact on taste and is free from PBA extension.

The advantage of the recycled rPET bottle is not only expressed in the improvement of the marketing of the packaging and in the environmental advantage, switching from glass to plastic, but it also has a great economic advantage in transport and, therefore, in saving costs and fuel burned for logistics.

In fact, according to Packamama, the rPET bottle, completely similar to the glass one, even in color, weighs only 63 gr. which corresponds to 87% less than a glass one, with evident implications on the carbon footprint in logistics.

According to Packamama, France is experiencing a series of negative coincidences in the wine sector, such as the lack of glass bottles, their prices much higher than in the past and the disaffection with wine on the part of the younger generation.

With the new rPET bottle, packaging prices will be more competitive, more stable, the most sustainable and most innovative product, also meeting the needs claimed by young people in terms of environmental protection.

The shortage of glass bottles, which has plagued France in recent years, has been triggered by the shutdown of the furnaces due to Covid 19, but it then continued due to the reduced general production, also as a result of the unacceptable cost of energy for some companies.

However, there is still a certain disappointment on the part of older wine consumers at the change of glass as raw material for bottles, being convinced that glass is, as a whole, more sustainable and circular than plastic.
