CLIMATE CHANGE AND DROUGHT. WATER IS NOT MADE (MAYBE)

rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - Climate Change and Drought. Water is not made (Maybe)

The drought has also arrived devastatingly in Europe, maybe now we will listen to the earth?

Covid, war, suffocating heat, drought, lack of energy, growing migratory flows, this is the picture of our contemporary life.

We like to see problems on television, with the foolish idea that they remain confined in them, then, we live life as usual, pretending that everything is fine.

Is it a form of protection? Perhaps, but in fact this is the situation, a set of linked facts (and I have not mentioned them all), which make life today and in the medium term complicated.

Everyone likes to talk about climate change, we are all ecologists to conform to the mass that, now, walks in this direction, but in reality, in our daily life we we behave in a not too green way.

We mirror the political class we elect, which should make decisions for the community, even unpopular ones, in the right direction for our future, but politics today seems a large social network and politicians, as influencers, must like and please, not govern.

So solving climate problems is difficult, because it seems that there are no priorities on the agenda, even if they are talked about daily.

For years we have been talking about renewable energy and for years we have done little to seriously increase the production of energy from the sun and wind, but now that the price of gas went to the stars dust off old projects left in the drawers of bureaucrats.

As far as water is concerned, the matter is, unfortunately, even more serious as it is not enough to finance new projects, as happened with renewable energy, to have more water, as this is difficult to produce.

Even for the water sector, a primary good for the population, the institutions have always done little, very little, in a country that until recently had no the problem of drought has never invested enough in aqueducts, which in many cases disperse even 30-40% of their flow along the way.

We did not invest in accumulations, creating in the wettest areas, such as in the mountains, reservoirs that could act as a water reserve when necessary, we did not invest in desalination plants along the coasts and an organic and social management of deep groundwater has never been addressed.

According to Istat data from 2019, groundwater guarantees 84% of drinking water needs (48% from wells and 36% from springs), as well as covering a significant part of agricultural and industrial needs.

Although affected by the decrease in rainfall, the national underground water resource is renewed annually for about 50 billion cubic meters, a value comparable to the water stored on average in the lake of Garda and the one that the river Po discharges into the Adriatic in one year on average.

Furthermore, the resource of air humidity should be exploited more, as it is possible to build dehumidifiers that, driven by renewable energy, transform humidity into drinking water.

These systems could contribute to reducing the use of the water we withdraw from the aqueducts, saving important natural resources.

Maybe we should wake up and do something in our own small way.
