Medieval thriller, unexplained disappearances, dark secrets of Brother Elara the investigator

by Marco Arezio

The icy wind whipped through the twisted trees of the Shadowlong Forest, moaning like a lost soul. Brother Elara, with his thick beard and eyes that had seen more winters than an ordinary man could imagine, ventured into the dark heart of the woods. His rough tunic barely protected him from the biting cold, but his faith and the heavy leather-bound Bible he clutched in his hands were his true bulwark.

For days, the village of Pietra Bianca had been plagued by strange disappearances. Young shepherds and sturdy woodcutters vanished into thin air, leaving no trace but a silence thick with fear. Voices whispered of ancient curses, of restless spirits wandering among the ancient trees, of a legendary creature that fed on souls. The Prior had implored Brother Elara, known for his wisdom and courage, to enter the forest and discover the truth.

The ground beneath his sandals was a carpet of damp, slippery leaves.

The air was saturated with the acrid smell of wet earth and moss. Every shadow seemed to hide a secret, every rustle of leaves a premonition. Brother Elara advanced with a firm step, his mind a fortress of prayers and ancient psalms. He did not fear death, but he feared the unknown, the dark forces that could corrupt the souls of men.

He reached a silent clearing, where a circle of mossy stones looked like a forgotten altar. In the center, a single footprint in the mud caught his eye. It was neither the track of a man nor of a known animal. It was large, deformed, with deep claws that had furrowed the earth. A shiver ran down his spine, a foreboding of something ancient and terrible.
