RENEWABLES: ENERGY ACCUMULATION THROUGH SAND BATTERIES

rMIX: Il Portale del Riciclo nell'Economia Circolare - Renewables: Energy Accumulation Through Sand Batteries

Speaking today of renewable energies we only break open doors, as the energy transition towards greener electricity production is now on the agenda of governments, companies and even citizens.

However, we also knew the minuses that the management system for the distribution of energy produced with renewable sources brought with it.

I refer in particular to the accumulation of energy surplus, to be used when solar and wind power plants do not have a high performance due to weather conditions or at night.

The bottleneck of large-scale energy conversion lay precisely in being able to have power continuously and without interruptions, even when production was low compared to demand.

A start-up, Magaldi Green Energy, thought of it, which proposed a battery, for the accumulation of surplus energy, through a patent for a "sand" battery.

The patented system is based on an accumulation technology created through a fluidized sand bed, which is powered, in turn, by renewable energy.

The sand battery can be charged with electrical or thermal energy, so that they are stored for a time ranging from 4 hours to a few weeks, without recording a loss important, to be returned to the network when needed, especially when the sun and wind do not produce them efficiently through dedicated systems.

The advantages of sand fluidization are very evident, according to Letizia Magaldi, vice president of the company, and concern the large thermal storage capacities, high thermal efficiency, with the possibility of improving the availability of energy in the network and the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
