What is immediately striking is the variety of teaching approaches: lectures, real-world case studies, digital simulations, group work, and a full final thesis, often in collaboration with Norwegian companies or international research centers.
Over the four semesters, students delve into the core disciplines of industrial ecology. Life Cycle Assessment, Material Flow Analysis, circular economy models, climate strategy and energy management, and environmental footprint systems are just some of the modules offered. This isn't just about learning theoretical tools, but also developing the critical thinking skills needed to apply these tools in the real world, adapting them to the needs of different industrial sectors.
Each student can also tailor their own study plan by choosing electives from a wide range of interdisciplinary courses. The final semester is dedicated to the master's thesis, an in-depth research project, which many choose to carry out in collaboration with businesses, NGOs, or public bodies.
Who is the Course For and How to Apply?
This course isn't for everyone, and it's not designed for those looking for an easy path. It requires a passion for sustainability, but also a solid foundation in disciplines such as mathematics, natural sciences, economics, or engineering. It's aimed at those with a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a related field and wish to apply their technical skills towards a sustainable future.
Applications open in October and, for non-European students, usually close in December . European students, however, have until spring (around March) to submit their applications. The following are required:

- English certificate (TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent)
The process is entirely online, but each step is clearly explained on the official website. NTNU does not charge tuition fees for international students, but the cost of living in Norway is high.
